On the 50th anniversary of the Smithsonian Institute’s National Collection of Fine Arts 1975 "Craft Multiples" Exhibition, the milestone is again recognized as a defining moment in American Art, design ,and craftsmanship.
The "Craft Multiples" exhibition opened to the public at the Smithsonian's Renwick Gallery on July 4, 1975, and remained on view through March 1976. Supported by a grant from the National endowment for the arts, the exhibition subsequently embarked on a three-year national tour, traveling to galleries across the United States until its conclusion in March 1979.
In Early 1975, the Smithsonian Institute issued a nationwide call for submissions. More than 2,800 works were entered for consideration. From this extensive field, Jeffrey Bigelow was selected as one of 126 designers, craftsmen, and artisans featured in the exhibition. His acrylic and glass dining table was highlighted in the official program as the exhibition's strongest demonstration of functional art - presented in striking contrast to a handmade Amish horse buggy, underscoring the breadth and diversity of American craft.
The anniversary marks a renewed appreceation for the artists whose work helped shape the evolution of contemporary craft and functional design in the United States.
